European bishops – Brussels: ” “a "chapel for Europe"” “” “

Restoring a chapel abandoned for over twenty years in the heart of the “European quarter” of Brussels and presenting it as a “chapel for Europe”, as a testimony to the Christian message and commitment for the construction of Europe: this is the project at the basis of the realization of the “Van Maerlant Chapel”, inaugurated on 25 September and rebaptized “Chapel of the Resurrection”. The project is the joint initiative of the Anglican Church, the Orthodox Church and the Protestant Churches gathered together in an “Ecumenical Advisory Council” which will coordinate the activities to be held in the new chapel. Apart from the crypt and the chapel itself, there are also two rooms for meetings, retreats and other activities. Situated not far from the Committee of the Regions, the chapel is located close to the seats of the European Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the European Commission. Realized at a total cost of 1.5 million euros, the purchase of the site (625,000 euros), the renovation and restoration of the chapel (875,000 euros) were financed through numerous donations and contributions from private citizens, religious institutions (Catholic, Protestant and ecumenical) and lay organizations, without any form of aid from EU institutions.
