“Once again Switzerland has been struck by a tragic accident”. So write the Conference of Swiss Bishops, the Federation of the Protestant Churches and the Christian-Catholic Church in a joint communiqué issued in recent days to express the “consternation” of the three Swiss Churches for the air accident that caused the death of 24 people. In the space of just two months, the Swiss Confederation has been struck by a series of tragic events: first the tragedy caused by a madman who erupted into the Parliament in Zug; then the fire that broke out in the St. Gotthard road tunnel. “For some time write the three Churches a series of tragic accidents has struck Switzerland, sowing disarray among the population. We pray that this obscure series of events, and the questions they pose about the meaning of such trials and tribulations, do not lead to insensibility or indifference”. “Moments of crisis like these add the Churches oblige us to seek together solutions to our problems and to reduce the risks as far as possible. At the same time, we must learn to live with our limitations and accept our vulnerability”.
