Christmas messages: Carey, “evil shall not triumph”” “

“Nothing justifies the tragic events of 11 September, but the West must realize that terrorism is fuelled by the inequalities that separate East and West, by the deep despair that reigns in the heart of refugees in many parts of the world, including Palestine, and by the lack of a future for millions of children”. This is the reflection that the archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, offers in his Christmas message this year. Our thoughts immediately go – the archbishop declares – to the 11 September, to the day on which the world saw “the terrible face” of terrorism. But – adds Carey – on that day “we also saw the face of the heroism, kindness and compassion that saved so many from a tragic end. We saw grief and despair but also the determination that evil shall not triumph”.
