The Commissions of the European Parliament met in inaugural session in Brussels from Monday 21 to Thursday 24 January 2002. The main points on the agenda were as follows: · Judicial and police cooperation in penal matters: framework programme, title VI of the Treaty on the European Union (Commission for the freedoms and rights of citizens, justice and internal affairs, first exchange of opinions, rapporteur: Coelho); · Judicial cooperation in civil matters: patria potestas, recognition and execution of sentences (Commission for freedoms, first exchange of opinions, rapporteur: Banotti); · Establishment of a network of points of contact in matters relating to those responsible for genocide or crimes against humanity (Commission for freedoms, examination of a draft report, rapporteur: Kirkhope); · European economic situation, preparatory report for the recommendation of the Commission on the general guidelines (Commission for economic and monetary problems, examination of a draft report, rapporteur: Trentin); · Employment: guidelines for the policies of member States in 2002 (Commission for employment and social affairs, exchange of opinions, rapporteur: Weiler); · Atmospheric pollution: clean air programme for Europe (CAFE), air quality (Commission for the environment, public health and consumer policy, examination of a draft report, rapporteur: Fitzsimons); · Draft resolution on the strategy of sustainable development in view of the European Council meeting in Barcelona (Commission for the environment, exchange of opinions on the basis of a draft resolution); · Audiovisuals and information: protection of juveniles and of human dignity (Commission for culture, youth, education, information media and sport, approval of a draft report, rapporteur: Heaton-Harris); · Heavily indebted poor countries; special loans, debt reduction (Commission for development and cooperation, examination of a draft report, rapporteur: Mantovani);
