An appeal to Christians to participate actively in the debate on the future of the European Union and a request to the national governments to involve the Churches in the process of reform, “following the example of countries like Austria, Finland, Ireland and Slovakia”: with this twofold objective, the Conference of the European Churches (KEK) has compiled a dossier on the European Convention which held its first meeting on 28 February. The KEK dossier ( available on the website: www.cec-kek.org) describes the structure of the Convention, reports in detail on its agenda and furnishes its 127 member churches (of Orthodox, Anglican, Protestant and Old-Catholic tradition) with various ways/procedures of contributing to the debate. “In countries like Austria, Finland, Ireland and Slovakia points out Keith Jenkins, head of KEK’s Church and Society Commission the government has established a Forum on the future of Europe to which representatives of the Churches also contribute. It should be insisted that the same happens in other countries”. In collaboration with the Commission of the Episcopal Conferences of the European Community (COMECE), the Kek says a press release – “will monitor the work of the Convention and produce other documents of information”.
