The European Court of Justice presented its report on its activity in 2001 at a press conference in Rome on 2 April. The statistics presented at the end of the report show that the activity of the Court and of the Tribunal remained quantitatively high in 2001 and in large measure comparable to the results of the previous year. In fact, the number of cases in which a sentence was given totalled 434 in the Court and 340 in the Tribunal, while the number of new cases registered was respectively 504 and 345. On the administrative level, the Court paid close attention to the questions linked to translation, in particular in view of EU enlargement and the difficulties that will arise from the growth of language combinations and the predictable increase in litigation. The Court has begun, in collaboration with the Tribunal, a process of reflection in the light of the forthcoming entry into force of the Treaty of Nice (distribution of jurisdictional competencies in terms of direct appeals and procedures for the creation of a jurisdictional section for disputes in the field of European public employment). The European Court of Justice is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of its foundation this year.
