“Caritas Europe is regarding with great concern the massive assault by Israeli forces on Palestinian towns and refugee camps in the West Bank and in the Gaza strip”, says a communiqué issued by Caritas Europe in recent days. The press release also condemns “inreservedly the attacks against Israeli civilians” and urges the international community to “demand the immediate end of the military operations in the Occupied Territories”. According to Caritas, it is essential that “international observers” be sent into the Territories, as a “deterrent against violence and the violation of human rights”. Equally urgent is the need to “put an end to the siege of the Palestinian territories”. Caritas Europe, which gathers together the representatives of 48 Catholic organizations from 44 European countries, expresses its appreciation, lastly, for “the enormous efforts that the European Union has made and is making in the search for peace in Palestine and asks the EU to maintain this determination, aimed at securing a just and lasting settlement for the region”.
