Church and Europe: some proposals” “

“Dialoguing with the elected members of parliament” about the work of the Convention for the future of Europe; “stimulating the Italian theological faculties to pay greater attention to European problems”; giving a higher profile to the “question of the Christian identity of Europe” in the curricula of Catholic schools; indicating European themes as “a perspective in which lay groups may rediscover passion and creativity”; “sensitizing the Catholic weeklies and local radio and television stations” on the question; “proposing moments of reflection about Europe to priests”; and soliciting the contribution of the institutes of consecrated life. These are the proposals made by Msgr. Attilio Nicora, vice-president of COMECE, the Commission of the episcopates of the European Community, to the general assembly of the Italian bishops (Rome, 20-24 May). The vice-president of COMECE celebrated the 25th anniversary of his episcopal ordination on 28 May. In a letter to mark the occasion, the Pope expressed to Bishop Nicora his gratitude and appreciation for the role he has played both in the juridical questions linked to the Concordat and in the contribution he has made to the Holy See and the Italian Episcopal Conference in the resolution of administrative and legislative problems.
