” “England: unity pact between the Churches” “

“We pledge to persevere in the search for a common understanding of the salvific message of Christ in the Gospel; and to work, in the light of the Holy Spirit, for the visible unity of the Church of Christ in the one faith”. This is the “pact” signed at Windsor on Sunday, 2 June, in the presence of queen Elizabeth and the leaders of the Christian Churches of the country. The declaration bears the signatures of the archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, of the archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, and of the Revs. Tony Burnham and Esme Beswick, as representatives of the other Christian Churches. “We have – says the document – much to give to and receive from each other, in the richness of the diversity of our traditions”. In the “pact” the representatives of the various confessions make a series of commitments: the Churches pledge to “increase friendship and reciprocal support; to pray, study and work together for the unity and the mission of the Church; to consult each other on questions that concern their common good; to promote justice, integrity and peace; and to speak with a single voice in bearing common witness everywhere to Jesus Christ”. On the same day Catholics and Anglicans celebrated the 20th anniversary of John Paul II’s journey to England, which took place from 28 May to 2 June 1982.
