A delegation of the European Christian Churches was received by the president of the European Commission, Romano Prodi on Monday 17 June. The delegation was led by Metroplitan Jérémie, president of KEK, the Conference that represents 126 Christian churches (Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and Old-Catholic) in all the countries of Europe. Representatives of the Churches of Finland, Germany, Slovakia and the United Kingdom were present. Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, head of the Department for foreign relations of the Patriarchate of Mosow, also formed part of the delegation. The KEK delegation met European Commission president Prodi and the commissioners Michel Barnier and Antonio Vitorino who represent the Commission at the Convention on the future of Europe. Immediately after the meeting, the Patriarchate of Moscow put out a statement, reconfirming the willingness of the Russian Orthodox Church to participate in dialogue and stressing its contribution to constructing a “world order” that may guarantee a stable coexistence between different models of culture and civilization”.
