Cardinal Karl Lehmann, president of the German Episcopal Conference, and Manfred Kock, president of the Evangelic Church, have condemned the recent terrorist attack on the island of Bali in Indonesia. In a letter to the president of the Indonesian Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Julius Riyadi Darmaatmadja, Archbishop Lehmann writes as follows: “Words cannot express the grief that unites us with you. Together we weep for the many dead and injured of this dreadful and inhuman act and are close to all the victims and their families”. “A dream island has become a nightmare island”: with these words Kock expressed solidarity with the victims of the attack and he added: “ All attempts to undermine religious toleration and to assert by force one’s own religious ideas must be prevented“.
