Members of the Anglican Communion and the eastern Orthodox Churches met in Armenia, from 5 to 10 November, for a meeting of dialogue promoted in the framework of an international Commission established by the two Churches. The meeting was co-chaired by Metropolitan Bishoy, of the Coptic Orthodox Church, and the Rev. Geoffrey Rowell, Anglican bishop of Gibraltar. The Commission, which had already met in England in 2001 to establish the agenda of its discussions, worked on the drafting of a “joint document on christology” to be submitted to the authorities of the two Churches. The Commission’s future agenda includes such questions as authority in the Church, ecclesiology, mission, the sacraments, homosexuality and other issues relating to the mission and the pastoral ministry of the Churches. The Armenian meeting says a press release was born from the consideration that “the Churches of the Anglican Communion and the eastern Orthodox Churches share a long history of cordial relations and pastoral contacts in many regions of the world” and from the “consciousness that the time has come to seek an agreement on matter of faith” to respond to Jesus’ prayer, that “his disciples all be one”. The members of the Commission were received by Karekin II, Catholicos of all the Armenians, and visited the memorial to the Armenian genocide.
