Europe: Cardinal Kasper, making the voice of Christians heard” “

If the Christian Churches in Europe, and in particular the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches, “speak together, their voice is stronger, and their voice is more listened to if they speak in favour of justice. It’s an issue on which there are no theological differences and on which we can give an example that reconciliation is possible”. So said Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity, in an interview with the Italian Catholic weekly “Settimana”. “There are many spheres – stressed Kasper – in which we can work together”. With regard to Europe, the Churches can “dialogue” with each other and proclaim that “ together, we can rediscover our Christian roots and begin a Christian revival, while respecting the various traditions, but at the same time recognizing their common foundation”. The aim – explains Kasper – is not to arrive at a uniform church. We need, rather, to conceive of a communion without fusion and without absorption. We need to think of a unity that recognizes the plurality of traditions, theologies, and disciplines”.
