“Faced by the increased violence in Israel and in the Palestinian Territories, which fuels feelings of hatred and vendetta, faced by the risks of a war against Iraq, we ask you Lord: give courage and perseverance to those who continue to work for a just peace in the countries of the Middle East and inspire the governments of the countries involved with a clear vision of their great responsibilities. We ask this of You in the name of He who is the prince of Peace, Jesus Christ our Lord”. So reads the text of the appeal for peace in Iraq and in the Middle East drawn up by the Christian Churches of Belgium and signed by D. Van Leeuwen of the Roman Anglican Church, by Metropolitan Panteleimon of the Orthodox Church of Belgium, by Cardinal G. Danneels of the Catholic Church and by D. Vanescote of the Protestant Church. The appeal was addressed to the members of the local communities just at a time when tension over a possible war with Iraq seems to be mounting day by day. “Faith in God, and love for all men, women and children declare the Churches pledge us to seek a peaceful solution to conflicts”. “We pray they add that the populations of Iraq and of the Middle East as a whole may enjoy peace and security and cooperate to this end”. The appeal concludes with an invitation to the local Churches to unite in prayer to implore a peaceful solution of conflicts.
