Archbishop Hocevar (Belgrade): "Serbia’s democratic course must continue"” “

“We are deeply shocked by the assassination of the prime minister of Serbia, Zoran Djindjic, on 12th March. His killing is a great crime which we condemn and expect everyone to do likewise”, commented metropolitan Archbishop Stanislaw Hocevar of Belgrade, president of the Episcopal conference of Serbia and Montenegro, as soon as he heard the news of the assassination which bereft the Serbian government of its head. “The Serbian Catholic Church – continued Msgr. Hocevar – is close to the inhabitants of this land and nation and wishes to do everything possible to maintain peace, justice and the progress of democracy. It calls for great responsibility, prayer and dedication to the common good, and expresses its firm hope that these great difficulties on the road of progress may, with God’s help, be overcome”. The Catholic Church in Serbia comprises some half a million faithful, many of them inhabitants of the territory of the Vojvodina. The country is still suffering from the consequences of the war back in the 1990s and also suffers from political instability, as demonstrated by the failed election to the post of President of the most representative leader, Voislav Kostunica, who failed to overcome the necessary quorum. Now, with the killing of Djindjic, the situation is even further complicated. ———————————————————————————————————– Sir Europa (English) N.ro assoluto : 1189 N.ro relativo : 19 Data pubblicazione : 14/03/2003
