In the course of their last plenary assembly, the Polish bishops did not fail to raise their voice in favour of peace. “The bishops reports Father Adam Schultz, spokesman of the Episcopal Conference also wished to deal with the internal situation of the country, with a very high unemployment rate (about 19%). Polish Caritas and various lay groups and movements have begun numerous aid projects aimed not only at the poorest sections of the population, but also, at the international level, at supporting development projects, in liaison with international Caritas, in Korea, in Mongolia, in four African nations and in the countries of Latin America”. During the meeting, the bishops also discussed the question of ethics in the political field, in the light of the frequent denunciations of corruption registered in public opinion. “The bishops says the spokesman used strong words to stress the need for politicians to show their attachment to the good of the country by offering a qualified and disinterested service”. On the question of the forthcoming referendum on EU membership, the hope was expressed that people would go to vote, with full freedom of conscience. “The values that the bishops recalled as essential and in need of being promoted at the European level concludes Father Schultz include the defence of life from the moment of conception, the protection of the heterosexual couple in marriage and the promotion of the family as the foundation of society”.
