Scientific progress at the service of man: “possibilities and limits of medical progress”: that’s the title of this year’s “Pro-Life Week” in Germany (cf. Sir 25/2003) which is due to open in Bayreuth on 3 May, with an ecumenical celebration officiated by Cardinal Karl Lehmann, president of the German Bishops’ Conference, and by Manfred Kock, president of the Council of the Evangelic Churches in Germany. The celebration will inaugurate Pro-Life Week (3 to 10 May) which will bring a series of events to many cities in Germany aimed at raising the awareness of believers in the opportunities but also the risks of medical progress (the programme can be consulted on the website www.dbk.de). Pro-Life Week, now in its 13th year, is a joint initiative of the Catholic and Evangelic Churches. It is aimed at fostering respect for life and placing the dignity of man at the centre of the new possibilities and methods offered by modern medicine.
