EU in brief" "

Television without frontiers” “

The European Commission is holding an audition open to the public on 23-24-25 June 2003 to debate issues relating to Television without Frontiers (TwF). The European Council too is dealing with the matter, concentrating on three specific issues: access to events of major importance for society ; the protection of the general interest in the sector of television advertising and sponsorization, telesales and self-promotion; access to short reportages of events of major interest. On condition that the principle of free access to information for everyone be safeguarded, the need has been underlined to strike the right balance between the protection of consumers and economic interests. The Commission has also expressed itself in favour of greater regulatory flexibility for the advertising sector, in order to adapt better to the new technologies (digital television and internet). It has also emphasized the importance of extending the legal provisions for the protection of juveniles and the right to reply.
