On the Albacete railway disaster” “

“Profound grief for the terrible railway accident” which took place on the night between 3 and 4 June at Chinchilla (Albacete) in south-west Spain, was expressed by the Spanish bishops in a telegram sent to the archbishop of Albacete. The train, carrying 86 passengers and four railway workers, was travelling from Madrid to the coastal city of Cartagena when it hit a goods convoy. The provisional estimate of the disaster is 19 dead and many missing. Cardinal Antonio M. Rouco Varela, president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, in the name of all the bishops, is praying for the relatives of the victims and for the injured. At the same time, he invites all the faithful to come together in prayer and to “express their closeness to and solidarity with all those who are suffering the consequences of this unfortunate accident”.
