“Penal proceedings need to be instituted to ascertain the responsibilities and to identify the perpetrators of this massacre”. On the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, which falls today, 11 July, the president of the Bosnian Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Vinko Puljic, asks for “justice and truth”. On 11 July 1995 the Serb militias of General Ratko Mladic, after the conquest of the town of Srebrenica, executed over 8,000 Moslems, mainly men and adolescents. “It is essential the Cardinal declared to SIR that penal proceedings be instituted that may ascertain the responsibilities for this massacre and identify the culprits”. “A judgement of the International Tribunal in The Hague he added is not enough. What’s needed is the judgement of a court here in Bosnia, as a guarantee of the rule of law, in which all men are equal. We need to proclaim our wish for truth and justice, not only outside, but also inside our frontiers”. The Cardinal also underlined another priority: “helping to heal the wounds in the hearts of many survivors”. “Remembering the victims of this massacre he continued serves to help the survivors, so that they may be able to live again. Each of them has a death in their family or among their friends. We need to accept this situation and show respect for everyone”. We also need, he said, to “respect ethnic, religious, cultural and political differences. We who live in this country must learn how to live together. The Pope reminded us of this during his last visit to Bosnia. We in the Church he concluded are engaged in dialogue with the other religions to teach and accept differences and sharing. Our richness is our diversity. If we are to show respect for the dead, we need to practice dialogue”. ———————————————————————————————————– Sir Europa (English) N.ro assoluto : 1221 N.ro relativo : 51 Data pubblicazione : 12/07/2003
