“The campaign against child poverty is more than a social question of our time: it’s fundamental for the very survival of our society”: so said Ralf Sauer, diocesan head of the Bdkj (League of Young German Catholics), speaking in Würzburg, on the occasion of the World Day of the Child, celebrated on 20 September. “In Germany, child poverty is more widespread that people imagine”, declared Sauer, referring to the data contained in the report on poverty published by the German government, which speaks of some “four million children” living in “conditions of poverty”. From the government’s heralded reform package “Agenda 2010”, the Bdkj awaits the “necessary socio-politician reforms”. It also appeals for a “reform of the educational system”, since “only those who especially support the children whose parents have remained trapped in the vicious circle of poverty and educational deprivation have a right to speak of equal opportunities”.
