A project promoted by the Slovak Episcopal Conference involves teaching Slovak MPs about bioethics and family policies. The seminar will be held on 3 October and is addressed at all the deputies of the national Parliament, but it is expected that others from neighbouring countries, Poland included, will also take part. Theme of the event: “Family and bioethics, the responsibility of politicians”. Venue of the event: Parliament House in Bratislava. The speakers will include Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Archbishop Carlo Caffarra of Ferrara, and two university professors, Xavier Lacroix from Lyon and Michael Schooyans from Louvain. “The aim of the meeting explains the spokesman of the Slovak bishops, Marian Gavenda is to help reflection on such important issues as bioethics and the family. Politicians too have responsibility in this field, by proposing laws that defend the fundamental values of society. The meeting therefore may also be an occasion to debate the law on abortion that awaits its return to Parliament after the ‘breathing space’ imposed by the President of the Slovak Republic. Also part of the same programme of awareness-raising is the international conference on ‘Christian ethics and perspective’ (3/5 October), being held under the auspices of the bishops of Slovakia, Austria and Hungary; it is aimed at everyone, not just scholars but simple citizens”.
