The work of the first EU summit under the Italian Presidency ends in Brussels on 17 October. Among the issues on the agenda: the discussion on the future of the European Constitution (role and status of the EU Foreign Minister, composition of the Commission after 2009, system of majority vote in Council), that on the area of freedom, security and justice, with the definition of the European strategy of the campaign against clandestine immigration, which will be adopted within the year, accompanied by EU policy for the integration of regular immigrants. Another crucial point was represented by the necessary measures for economic recovery in Europe, a few days after the Commission’s approval of a package of 29 priority projects aimed at stimulating growth. Lastly, the summit analysed the future “European structure of maritime presence”, aimed at improving joint action against illicit traffic, including the traffic of human beings.
