A universal moratorium on the death sentence: the European Parliament (EP) approved a resolution asking for just this on 23 October. Such a pledge has long been urged by MEPs belonging to various political groups. They expressed the hope for a European initiative within the UNO. The resolution of the EP asks the President of the Council to act without delay in presenting a resolution to the General Assembly of the United Nations, asking for the adoption of a universal moratorium on capital executions. The document approved by the EP states that “the European Union considers that the death sentence is a violation of the right to life and requests its abolition. The aspiration of the EU is to see the death sentence abolished, de jure and de facto, in all countries of the world, both in time of peace and in time of war. The EU invites the countries that have not yet abolished the death sentence to introduce at least a moratorium, as a first step towards its complete abolition”.
