The European Parliament adopted, on 20 November, a Resolution expressing its serious concern about the situation in the Indonesian province of Aceh, and in particular about the extension of martial law and military operations. The EP denounces the acts of violence now taking place, including armed conflicts, kidnappings, assassinations and other acts of violence, especially outside the main towns in the province. The Indonesian government is invited to ensure access to the agencies of the UNO and the NGOs that may assist in the protection of civilians, in particular refugees, as well as to permit UN observers to visit the province. Lastly, the Resolution asks that the European Commission assist the Indonesian government in its efforts to apply the UN Convention against torture.
