The joint assembly of the two Protestant Churches of Alsace and Lorraine (Church of the Augusburg Confession and Reformed Church) has formally pledged to seek union between them. Meeting in Colmar on 15 and 16 November, the assembly, by a large majority, gave a mandate to a joint Council to formulate, by 31 March 2004, a specific project for the fusion between the two Churches. The project will then be submitted to the Synod of the Reformed Church and to the higher Consistory of the Protestant Church with a view to being definitively approved by the joint assembly in December next year. The project says a joint communiqué was undertaken to “give more genuine and effective witness to the Gospel”.
