“There is no cause, either national or international, that may justify terrorist actions”. So declares Juan Antonio Martínez Camino, secretary of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, in a letter sent to the vicar general of the military archdiocese of Spain to express the bishops’ grief for the death of 7 members of the Spanish secret services in a terrorist attack in Baghdad on 29 November. On 12 November Italy too was shocked by a similar tragedy following the terrorist attack at Nassiriya, which led to the death of 12 carabinieri, 5 soldiers and 2 civilians. Msgr. Martínez Camino gave his assurances of “prayers and intercession” for the victims who “died he says in the exercise of their responsibility, and it is right to recognize this and to thank them”. In a telegram sent to the Spanish Ministry of Defence, Federico-Trillo-Figueroa y Martínez-Conde, general secretary of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, condemned the terrorist action. Archbishop Antonio Cañizares of Toledo has expressed his closeness to the victims, their families and the members of the security forces, “who serve society and give their life to re-establish fundamental rights”. “These men died by giving their life for others, at the service of a more secure and more peaceful society”, said Msgr. Cañizares, expressing the hope that “so much violence and terrorism may end”.
