England: a year of volunteer service for the young ” “

“10-27.com” (from the verse of Luke’s Gospel) is the title of the project proposed by the Catholic Youth Service, by Caritas Social Action and Time for God to English young people aged from 18 to 27: it consists of being willing to dedicate 9 or 12 months of their own life to volunteer service in Great Britain or the USA. “The young will be involved in projects that entail caring for children with particular needs – explain the promoters -, the homeless or single parents, the elderly, etc.”. For Helen Bardy, who directs the Catholic Youth Service, “this is a fantastic opportunity to enable the young to grow in faith”. “By sharing their own time with a larger community – adds Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, president of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales – these volunteers will obtain a richness of experience; they will develop new skills and provide assistance to many people”. Young people belonging to any confession may apply to participate in the project, with a covering letter from their parish priest, pastor or chaplain. The experience will mean living away from home – in the UK and soon in the USA – and the organizations where the service is performed will also have the task of providing board and lodging and reimbursing expenses. Volunteers will be prepared through training courses and will have the support of tutors to monitor their experience, which will consist of 35-40 hours of work per week with two free days.
