Agreement between the USA and the European Union on the Community’s “Galileo” project of satellite navigation is now closer. Galileo, now in a phase of advanced realization in Europe, interferes with the GPS system of satellite positioning, causing imbalances in American military applications, including operations conducted in the framework of NATO. For this reason Washington had requested Brussels to study the necessary technical modifications to ensure the compatibility of the two systems. After various meetings, both sides have now found an agreement in principle on the frequencies on which Galileo will transmit its own signals: a meeting is scheduled in the American capital at the end of the month, which ought to give the final go ahead to the full application of the project.
