The European Commission approved in recent days a humanitarian aid package for the regions in crisis in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The appropriations, for a total of 31,296 million Euros, are to be allocated to government agencies and NGOs and must be used for the realization of projects under the control of Echo, the EU Office for Humanitarian Aid. The largest funding, equivalent to over 6 million Euros, is being allocated to the support of refugees and poor populations in Afghanistan, including displaced persons in Iran and Pakistan. Just over 5 million will go to the 155,000 Sahrawi refugees who are still living in makeshift camps in desert areas of Algeria, following the occupation of Western Sahara by Morocco in 1975. Aid worth 5 million Euros has been approved to relieve malnutrition among children in North Korea. The EU aid package also provides help to reconstruction in Angola, refugees in Bhutan, the victims of conflicts in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Congo and Somalia, the drought-stricken populations in Ethiopia, the victims of cholera in Mali, Colombian refugees in Ecuador, and the poor in the States of Central America. ———————————————————————————————————– Sir Europa (English) N.ro assoluto : 1262 N.ro relativo : 2 Data pubblicazione : 15/01/2004
