Catechesis Sunday will be celebrated for the first time in Ireland on 8 February. This year it will have as its theme “A living faith”. The aim of the event promoted by the episcopal Commission for catechesis is to “foster and deepen the faith of people of all ages”. It will become an annual event. In preparation for it, the Irish Bishops’ Conference has inaugurated a web page on which parish communities can find information, suggestions and proposals. “Catechesis Sunday explains the presentation of the project gives us the chance to celebrate our faith, a faith that is alive in our hearts, in schools, and in parishes. That’s why the theme chosen for 2004 is ‘A living faith’. It’s time to recognise and support the wonderful work being done by parents, teachers, priests and by all members of our communities”. “Our commitment is to communicate the good news in the world today”. How? The episcopal Commission makes two suggestions. “Faith it writes gives joy. That’s why those who educate in the faith must show enthusiasm and the joy of being a follower of Christ… Before sharing joy with others, we need to experience this joy ourselves”. Teaching the faith, moreover, means enabling others to know Jesus. “Our faith writes the Commission refers to a person, not to a code of conduct”.
