The annual meeting of the joint Committee of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Council of the Episcopal Conferences of Europe (CCEE) will be held at Opole, in Poland, from 29 January to 1st February. The Committee, which has met each year since 1972, is responsible for relations between the CEC and CCEE. CCEE president, Msgr. Amédée Grab (bishop of Chur, Switzerland) and the newly elected president of the CEC, pastor Jean-Arnold de Clermont (Reformed Church, France), will jointly chair the work. The meeting of this Committee is the first after the election of the new CEC executive at Geneva in December. The agenda of the meeting includes a review of the ecumenical situation in Europe and the work of CCEE and CEC, the process of reception of the Charta Oecumenica, and the work of the “Islam in Europe” Committee. At the centre of discussion will be the planning of the third European Ecumenical Assembly: its theme, objectives and process of preparation all need to be defined. The reports on the work undertaken in Brussels by the CEC “Church and Society” Commission and by the Commission of the Episcopates of the European Union (COMECE) in relation to the process of the European Convention will also be presented. The members of the Committee will also meet representatives of the Polish Churches and local political authorities.
