The political Office of CRPM, the Conference of Peripherical and Maritime Regions, that brings together over 150 European Regions, was held in Cagliari last week. Three main and closely interconnected questions were on the agenda: the future of EU economic and social cohesion policy; the new post-2006 financial prospects for the enlarged Union; and the definition of new strategies for the sea. The project “Towards Maritime Europe” was presented. It contemplates the definition of five new approaches to marine resources and their potential: the sea as interface between economic spaces; as resource to be safeguarded; as economic space as such; as space for research, development and innovation; and lastly, the sea as space for governance. At the end of the meeting the CRPM pledged to reinforce its own activities for maritime security, with a view to “preventing further disasters like the one in Galicia”.
