Combating discrimination in the EU” “

With the aim of “promoting the participation of the main interested parties and the public at large in the definition for measures for combating discrimination”, the European Commission launched a consultation via Internet on Thursday, 3 June. The Consultation, which will run to the end of August, is a follow up to the “Green Paper on equality and non-discrimination in the enlarged European Union”, published on 26 May. It is intended to give European citizens the chance to submit ideas, suggestions and proposals about the content of current or planned EU legislation in the sector to the attention of EU legislators. The Commission’s ambition is, on the one hand, to facilitate public participation in the definition of anti-discrimination policies and, on the other, to monitor the effective implementation of the measures approved. Apart from the “classic” forms of discrimination (based on race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, age), the consultation also aims to throw light on “new”, or less well-known, discriminatory acts. PRIZE FOR JOURNALISM. “For diversity, against discrimination”: that’s the title of the Prize for Journalism launched by the EU in early June. Open to the participation of journalists from all 25 member states of the EU, its objective is to “increase awareness of and stimulate the debate on issues of discrimination”. The theme of this year’s award will be: “combating discrimination and promotion of diversity in employment”. It was chosen on the basis of a Eurobarometer survey in 2003, according to which the majority of European citizens declared they were worried about the scale of the phenomenon of discrimination on the work place. The articles entered for the prize will be assessed by a jury composed of professionals of communication and anti-discrimination experts: apart from 25 national winners, the Jury will select three finalists who will be offered a journey to a European country.
