“I congratulate the project ‘Keeping families afloat’. The necessary commitment to the support of family life is very complex. We must oppose everything that diminishes the family or contributes to dismantle it; that’s why ‘Caritas social action’ and this initiative are so important”, said the Catholic Primate of England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor. The cardinal was speaking during the celebration held in London in recent days to launch the new programme of support for the family “Keeping the Family Afloat”, promoted by “Caritas social action”, the agency of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales for social welfare and justice, and the care of children and adults in difficulty. Experts, families, administrators, volunteers, bishops and priests gathered in Eccleston Square to launch the new project, and also to celebrate the various activities performed every year in support of some 90,000 families. Some 50 million pounds, of which only one million funded by the government, were spent in diocesan social welfare agencies alone last year in aid of families in need.
