The Day of Responsibility on the Roads is celebrated in Spain on 4 July. The Spanish Church, in the form of a message issued by Msgr. Carmelo Echenagusìa Uribe, bishop in charge of the highway apostolate, is also joining with the many organizations and individuals who are working to improve the situation in this field. Spain in fact registered a substantial drop in the number of fatal accidents on the roads in 2003: 4,032 against 5,347 in 2002. During the period of Holy Week, points out the bishop, there was a 20% reduction, also thanks “to the improvements of the roads and car safety, the new regulations of the Highway Code, the increased vigilance of the traffic police and the appeals for the exercise of responsibility”. In his message the bishop invites drivers to dedicate their hours of travel “to the meeting with themselves”, with nature, with others and especially with God.
