Three days of debate to “invent European society”: that’s the aim of the Semaines sociales of France, which this year are being held in Lille, European capital of culture 2004, from 23 to 26 September, and will have a decidedly European character. Discussion will focus on the family and society, peace, freedom and religions, democracy and participation, sustainable development, poverty and sharing. Over 5000 participants from all over Europe are expected to attend, also to celebrate the centenary of the Semaines sociales in France. “At a time when Europe is being enlarged says the presentation of the event it’s time to define the field of action of its 435 million citizens, with the concern to place man at the centre of society. The numerous debates due to take place during the week will therefore propose “a view of Europe experienced not as an institution but as a living community of men and women”. Other questions on the agenda: that of Europe at the service of peace, to “understand the difficulties of putting in place a common foreign and security policy, to guarantee peace against terrorism”.
