Anti-terrorism: use of biometric data banks” “

The EU is giving proof of “reinforced cooperation” in the field of the campaign against terrorism. The Ministers for the Interior of the so-called “Group of 5” (composed of the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy) met in Sheffield (GB) last week, for an informal summit in the framework of joint activities in the fight against terrorism and collaboration between police forces and intelligence services. The Group of 5 – which has stepped up its own action following the terrorist attacks in Madrid on 11 March – discussed in particular the probable insertion of personal biometric data in identity cards, a measure unanimously considered indispensable to crack down on international terrorism in a more effective way. During their next summit, scheduled after the summer break, the five countries are expected to announce the adoption of specific measures – reproducible on a European scale – for cooperation between police forces and civil and military secret services.
