Dismantling nuclear power stations” “

The Commission published on 26 October a report on the need to guarantee adequate financial resources and more transparent controls for the dismantling of nuclear power stations. Member states have already assumed the commitment to close by 2025 over fifty nuclear reactors considered at risk, either to build new ones (where possible) or invest more heavily in alternative energy sectors. In particular, Brussels intends to guarantee “maximum transparency” in the economic management of the relevant contracts, with the aim of preventing distortions on the internal market of energy and electricity. The report – that anticipates a Euratom recommendation expected for next year – is aimed at harmonizing the methods and practices for the dismantling operations (that vary from country to country), and promoting the maximum level of safety for an activity that in any case involves great risks.
