Romania: bishops’ appeal for the general elections ” “

“The question who will exercise power for the next four years is not a matter of indifference to us”, declare the Catholic bishops of Latin and Byzantine rite in a communiqué issued at the end of the autumn assembly of the Romanian Episcopal Conference, held in Bucharest from 18 to 20 October. In view of the general elections due to be held in Romania on 28 November, the bishops say they are “concerned by the absenteeism that is increasingly characterising elections” in the country and appeal to Romanian Catholics to vote, recalling that it is a “right and a moral obligation to present oneself at the ballot box”. “The faithful must, in conscience, vote for those who try to defend the common good, and who respect our Christian, civic and national rights, not only in word but also in deed”, stressed the bishops, who also emphasized the need for Catholics to “contribute together, through their own vote, to the responsible construction of the future of the country and its integration in the European Union”.
