Christians against the trafficking in women” “

“We have seen the impact of the faith in action”: that’s the comment of Sister Lynda Dearlove, of the Sisters of Mercy, after the recent visit of an ecumenical delegation to the Ukraine, where it discussed various measures aimed at curbing the trafficking of women in the country. During its visit the ecumenical group, formed of representatives of various Christian Churches and organizations linked to them, which deal with cooperation against the white slave trade, were updated about various projects begun by Caritas in the Ukraine to address the problem and presented its own measures. The visit forms part of the activities of the European network “Christian Action against the Trafficking of Human Beings” (CAT). “Our partners in the Ukraine offer, through their own efforts and their cooperation with non-governmental organizations and State institutions, an excellent example of how this potential may be used”, observed Torsten Moritz, in charge of the CAT project, which is coordinated by the Commission of the Churches for migrants in Europe (CCME). The emphasis has been placed on the importance of the activity of prevention through the provision of hotlines and specialized advisory services for unemployed women in the more remote areas of the Ukraine. In particular, efforts are being made to trace the women who have managed to escape from the clutches of the traffickers and have returned to their country and who present serious problems, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
