Greater commitment against discrimination” “

The results of the public consultation on the Executive’s Green Paper “Equality and non-discrimination in the enlarged European Union” have been published on the Internet site of the European Commission http://europa.eu.int/comm/employment_social/fundamental_rights/greenpaper_fr.htm. Of the over 1500 contributions, a very large majority ask the Union to step up its commitment against any type of discrimination: in particular, half of the participants in the consultation consider “limited or zero” the impact of the two Directives of 2000 that prohibit any form of discrimination based on race or ethnic origin, religion, handicap, age or sexual orientation. To the question “what is the most effective means of countering discrimination?”, 34.2% replied legislation, 31.8% awareness-raising and only 22.6% specific actions and projects. In the light of the findings of the consultation, the Commission will take a series of measures in 2005 that will culminate in the drafting of a new Communication on discrimination (the step preliminary to legislation) by the end of 2005. ———————————————————————————————————– Sir Europa (English) N.ro assoluto : 1347 N.ro relativo : 87 Data pubblicazione : 08/12/04
