Faced by multiple challenges on the international political scene, the European Union must develop and implement an effective common foreign policy, able to guarantee the capacity of acting, of responding to the new emergencies and of being a protagonist of global economic governance, human development and a model of democracy based on the rule of law. This was the central theme of the Conference organized in Brussels on 1-2 December by the Jean Monnet Project in collaboration with ECSA (European Community Studies Association), with the title: “European Union and the new world orders: perceptions and strategies”. Academics and scholars from all over the world participated in the conference (including Boutrous Ghali, former Secretary General of the UN, and Federico Mayor, former Secretary General pf UNESCO), as well as representatives of the EU Institutions and the governments of the member states.
