“The UN’s promotion of the right to kill unborn children is a shameful example that dishonours human thought”, said the President of the Polish Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Józef Michalik, commenting in a statement released to the KAI (Catholic press agency) on the recent pro-abortion recommendations of the Committee for Human Rights of the UNO, which he denounced as “a further proof of the crisis of this organization”. According to Michalik, a pronouncement of this kind reveals “an astonishing blindness of consciences and minds, just at a time when Europe and a part of the world are experiencing serious demographic problems”. The archbishop declared that “the UNO ought to make appeals in favour of mothers in need of help to bring up their children or to bring them into the world, rather than invite the creation of easier conditions for killing them. That would undoubtedly be a real step in the right direction to make the world more civil and human. Instead the UNO is promoting the right to kill those who have not yet been born”. The general secretary of the Polish Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Piotr Libera, has also intervened on the question, declaring that “to link human rights with the right to abortion means distorting the truth and trying to manipulate it”. “If we defend the rights of women, – he added we must also ask ourselves who will defend the rights of children, including those not yet born”. He also pointed out that the documents of the international conferences promoted by the UNO in Beijing and Cairo do not justify such an interpretation of human rights.
