“The next Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (18-25 January) in Slovakia will be celebrated in the spirit of solidarity and spiritual sharing with the victims of the tsunami in South-East Asia. The decision taken by common agreement marks a step ahead of the Churches in the field of solidarity and communion”, said the spokesman of the Slovak Episcopal Conference, Marian Gavenda, in a statement to SIR. “The bishops he said have also asked the diocesan churches to raise funds to be allocated to the victims of the tsunami through international Caritas. The Government, moreover, is playing its part by sending, among other things, teams specialized in the disinfection of holding camps for the homeless and water supplies. Although there are no reported Slovak citizens among the victims of the disaster, Slovakia is nonetheless making its own contribution in the international contest of solidarity with the populations struck by the tsunami”.
