The parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe will be held in its Strasbourg headquarters from 24 to 28 January. The order of the day includes interventions by Viktor Yushchenko, who will be installed as the new President of Ukraine on 23 January, and by Mikhail Saakashvili, the President of Georgia. A ceremony to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the death camp at Auschwitz is planned for Tuesday, 25 January, in the presence of some holocaust survivors. The assembly will also have to prepare the third Summit of the organization, scheduled to be held in Warsaw on 16-17 May 2005 and is called to review the role of the Council of Europe “as guarantor of human rights in the continent”. The tragedy of the tsunami in South-East Asia and the prospects of peace in the Middle East are other items on the agenda of the 46 member states of the Council. There will also be an evaluation of the programme of the European Year of citizenship through education.
