In response to the many cases of death due to domestic violence that have occurred in Spain in recent times, the bishop of Málaga Antonio Dorado Soto has urged citizens to ask themselves “what type of values does our educational system transmit?”. Msgr. Dorado made this appeal in recent days, immediately after the discovery in his diocese of the lifeless body of Inmaculada Marfil, a 22-year-old woman, married only three months ago and killed by her 21-year-old husband. In the view of the Spanish bishop, “this new victim of domestic violence represents an appeal to our conscience, so that, moved by faith in Christ and respect for the dignity of the person, we may analyze the causes of this terrible scourge that only yesterday claimed three new victims”. The bishop admits that “even if indispensable, judicial and police measures are not a sufficient response” and invites citizens to question themselves about the “moral health of our society and the education given with the family from the earliest age”. “May this repugnant murder help us the bishop says – to react with greatness of spirit and unite our efforts to improve education within the family and curb violence”.
