Spain: bishops and referendum on Europe” “

In view of the forthcoming referendum on the European Constitution due to be held in Spain on 20 February, the Spanish bishops have expressed their position in a statement, issued on the conclusion of the meeting of the permanent Council held in Madrid in recent days. The bishops believe that is “morally necessary to work for ever greater and ever more just integration in Europe”. But they think that “the commitment to Europe does not oblige them to indicate, in the exercise of their pastoral mission, any recommendations about how to vote in this referendum. A ‘yes’ vote, or a ‘no’ vote, an unmarked ballot paper or abstention, are all possible and legitimate options. An unmarked ballot paper and abstention are legitimate in the case of the voter being unable to overcome doubts or accept the basic approach of the consultation. In each case, it will be necessary to act according to conscience, carefully weighing the motives that really prompt our action”.
