The Economic and Social Commission of the European Union (EESC) has approved an opinion on its own initiative by which it formulates “nine concrete recommendations” to improve and make more coherent the coordination at the Community level between the economic policy and employment policy of the EU in the framework of the correct application of the Lisbon Strategy. The most significant of the EESC’s proposals concern the better integration of social partners in the decision-making processes, the need for closer co-operation between the various councils of EU Ministers, greater support for the role of small and medium businesses as employment creators, so-called “lisbonization” of the Community budget (i.e. the allocation of greater resources to items of expenditure directly linked to employment strategy), and the reinforcement of dialogue with civil society.
