A “clear ban on any form of cloning”: that is the request of the Austrian pro-life organization “Aktion Leben” in countering “the alarming tendency” in Europe to open the way to therapeutic cloning, an “aberrant” concept. “It is more correct in the view of the association to speak of cloning for purposes of research and what it involves: it is necessary to produce a cloned human being and destroy it to remove stem cells from it”. The organization has warned of the abuse of human beings as guinea pigs: “We cannot have any illusions about what licences for cloning, like that recently granted in Great Britain, entail and where they will lead us. Women are exploited as producers of egg cells; embryos are mass-produced; and human life increasingly becomes a raw material sacrificed for the most varied interests”.
